Benito the Beach Bum – Bacalar Pet Friendly
Bacalar is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. It’s about 5 hours south of Cancun, as far as you can go before you hit the border with Belize. And unlike the coast of Riviera Maya with waves of the Atlantic, Bacalar’s coast is a beautiful fresh water lagoon with a kaleidoscope of glimmering shades of blue.
Now, I have learned to love the water, but it is here where I discovered and developed my Miguel Phelps-like swimming skills. With calm open waters, I learned to swim without my swimmies and even learned to dive off docks.
One day, we went sailing. Captain Nicolas named me co-captain of the sails. The wind through my hair and the blue waters around, we ventured the whole lagoon. My favorite place was the Pirates Channel, full of sandbars made of sulfur mud, I got to exfoliate my paws and face with a beauty mask. I liked being surrounded completely by water but still being able to stand. The sail tour also took us to Bird Island and a cenote to snorkel. I drank some coronas and floated in the water most of the time.
Despite all Bacalar hotels being rustic and basic, many do not accept dogs. We stayed at Casa Lamat and it was nice. To get to Bacalar you can either fly in to Cancun and drive 5 hours or there are flights from Mexico City to Chetumal on pet-friendly airline Interjet. From Chetumal, it’s about an hour.
I give Bacalar a 8/10 for being a Pet Friendly destination in Mexico
